Community Consolidated School District 62 voted Jan. 21 to approve a resolution abating the supplemental levy for the current tax year after staff explained how the state law affects the district's levy calculations.
District staff explained that a state law enacted a few years ago allows school districts to add a supplemental levy to recapture amounts refunded to commercial and industrial taxpayers; the county's timing sometimes delays receipt of the final supplemental number. For the current year, staff reported the supplemental levy amount as $1,057,243, a figure that has ranged in recent years from about $706,000 to $2,100,000.
A motion was made to approve the resolution abating the supplemental levy; the board voted in favor by roll call. Staff said they would submit the approved resolution to the county clerk this week to complete the administrative process.
Board discussion included procedural questions about the timing of the county's figures and past practice of addressing supplemental levy items in January.
