District names 13 Purple Star schools and announces CPR Day Miami for Jan. 25

The superintendent told the board that Miami‑Dade is participating for the first time in Florida's Purple Star Schools of Distinction program and that 13 district schools earned the designation this year for their work supporting military-connected students.
Retired Lt. Col. Tom Gammon, education officer at the Miami‑Dade Military Museum, urged district support and offered museum resources to the Purple Star program. Assistant Superintendent Lisette Alves called principals forward and listed the schools and their representatives during the meeting.
The superintendent also announced CPR Day Miami set for Saturday, Jan. 25, in partnership with Jackson Health System, the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association. Lisa Thurber, administrative director for family and community engagement, said the district has secured more than 40 certified CPR instructors for free 30‑minute hands‑only sessions at multiple sites, with an additional three-hour CPR/AED certification offered at a reduced $20 cost thanks to Cigna sponsorship.
District staff said the initiative trains families, students and employees in lifesaving response skills and that registration and site information were being shared with school sites.
