Miami-Dade School Board honors G. Holmes Braddock, Gustavo 'Gus' Cabrera and Vernon Carey

The Miami-Dade County School Board on Wednesday approved three ceremonial resolutions honoring local leaders for long service and community contributions.
Board Member Luisa Santos presented resolution 25-003 to recognize G. Holmes Braddock, noting his 38 years on the board and leadership during desegregation and for bilingual education. Public speaker Michael Rosenthal praised Braddock’s record, saying, "No phrase better describes the life of Holmes Braddock than do the right thing." Thomas Evans and others recounted Braddock’s role in historic moments including the Mariel boatlift and the district’s integration struggles.
The board added cosponsors and approved the resolution by voice vote. Santos said Braddock’s initiatives — including the college assistance program, volunteer program and work on athletic program allocations — continue to affect district policy and student services.
The board then approved resolution 25-001 honoring Gustavo "Gus" Cabrera, described by the chair as a Coral Park High School alumnus, former MasTec executive and past president of the Latin Builders Association. The resolution noted Cabrera’s advocacy for permitting reform, workforce housing and industry engagement to lower construction costs and expand housing options. Cabrera was joined by his wife, Marta Cabrera, a longtime district teacher; the board added cosponsors and passed the item by voice vote.
Finally, the board recognized former Miami Dolphins lineman and community mentor Vernon Carey. Presenter Dr. Bendros Mendengal described Carey’s Carey Family Foundation and mentoring programs and listed fundraising and school support activities. Carey briefly addressed the board and thanked members for the honor; the board approved the recognition by voice vote.
All three honors were presented in the morning session and approved without recorded roll-call tallies. The board and presenters framed the items as ceremonial recognitions of long-term service and local philanthropic activity. The meeting later reconvened in the afternoon for regular business.
