Court proclaims CAPCOG Preparedness Month and extends county burn ban

Caldwell County Commissioners on Aug. 27 approved a proclamation designating September 2024 as Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) Preparedness Month. The proclamation encourages residents, businesses and schools in the CAPCOG region to develop preparedness plans and to register for emergency alerts (materials cited ready.gov and regional alert sites). The motion to approve the proclamation carried by voice vote.
Separately, Hector (county emergency/fire staff) gave an update on recent fire activity and dryness conditions, reporting Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) readings with a minimum of 513, a maximum of 662 and an average of 587 and recommended continuing the burn ban for two weeks until substantial rain occurs. Commissioners moved, seconded, and unanimously voted to continue the burn ban.
The transcript records that the county will keep the burn ban on the books and that staff will monitor conditions for lifting the restriction after significant precipitation.
