Caldwell County commissioners approved a $10,400 budget amendment Oct. 22 to adjust pay in the County Clerk’s office, transferring funds from contingency to the clerical/assistant salary line to allow a 5% increase for longer‑tenured staff.
Auditor Danny Telto explained the amendment followed the court’s earlier decision to bring any position falling below $40,000 up to that minimum after a cost-of-living increase. That policy left some long‑tenured employees earning near the new floor and caused pay compression with newer hires. The amendment will allow a lump-sum adjustment so that staff with more responsibility and tenure receive a proportionate raise.
Telto said the lowest affected salary was about $36,300.59, a move to $40,000 would represent about a 9.1% increase for that employee; the court chose a targeted $10,400 transfer to address the differential across the affected employees. Commissioners discussed alternative approaches such as applying a uniform percentage; after questions and clarification, the court approved the amendment by voice vote.
