Caldwell County Commissioners conducted a roll-call vote on Aug. 27 to accept a proposed tax rate for the 2024 tax year. County staff read the components of the rate: maintenance and operations (M&O) 0.4035, farm-to-market/special bridge 0.0001, and debt service 0.0350, for a total tax rate of 0.4391 per $100 of valuation. The county stated this is a decrease of 3.1 cents from the prior year.
County leadership emphasized the court is accepting the rate for appraisal-district scheduling purposes and that formal adoption will occur on Sept. 10. The judge noted the court chose not to add the 3.5% rate increase allowed by state law, saying the budget could be balanced with the no-new-revenue rate.
During the roll call, Commissioners Westmoreland, Horn, Theriault, and Thomas each answered "Aye," and the presiding judge also voted "Aye," producing a unanimous vote to accept the proposed rate.
The vote was procedural acceptance required so the appraisal district may proceed; final adoption and any related budget adjustments remain scheduled for the next court meeting.
