The Weslaco City Commission on Dec. 26 certified the results of the Dec. 14 runoff and formally swore in Pete Garcia Jr. as Commissioner at Large.
At a special called meeting that began at 4:10 p.m., the commission convened as the local canvassing authority and considered Resolution 2024‑84, which cites Texas Election Code §67.004(a) and certifies the December 14, 2024 City of Weslaco runoff election returns. The city secretary read the vote totals: Dominic A. Reina 1,324 and Pete Garcia Junior 1,433, and the commission recorded that Pete Garcia Junior was elected to the position of Commissioner at Large.
A motion to approve the certification was made by Commissioner Fariaz and seconded by Commissioner Pedresa; the chair called for the ayes and declared the motion passed. The resolution is recorded as Resolution 2024‑84.
Judge Macias administered the oath of office to Pete Garcia Junior. During the oath, Garcia repeated the pledge: "I, Pete Garcia Junior, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the duties of the office of Weslaco City Commissioner at Large of the State of Texas and that I will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and of the state. So help me God." After being sworn, Garcia offered brief remarks thanking family, campaign supporters and city staff.
Commission members offered congratulations to the newly sworn commissioner and expressed optimism about the city’s direction. The meeting adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
