Gary schools warn parents: bring immunization records or a waiver — mobile clinic planned if demand meets threshold

Human resources and nursing staff told the Gary Community School Corporation board on Sept. 11 that student immunization compliance is governed by Indiana Code 20-30-4-2 and that students must have records, a medical exemption, or a religious waiver on file by the district’s stated deadline.
"It's important to note that all of this is dictated by Indiana code, and that Indiana code is 20 dash 30 dash 4 dash 2," the staff presenter said. Staff explained the required immunizations (DTaP, polio, hepatitis B, MMR, varicella and hepatitis A) and said students without records, a religious waiver, or a medical exemption would receive letters explaining they must be excluded until compliance is documented.
The district said it is coordinating with the Lake County Health Department (219-755-3658) and that school nurses will help parents who have difficulty obtaining immunizations. Staff said a mobile vaccination unit will visit schools if at least 10 permission slips are returned, giving families a local access option.
