Gary snapshot: district launches UFLI literacy pilot and clarifies staffing policies

At the opening of the Sept. 11 meeting, Mrs. Wellington presented a "Gary snapshot" that included athletics and district classroom highlights and introduced the district’s new literacy initiative, UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Instruction). She described classroom technology and small-group phonics instruction, saying the program "is being implemented as core study for grades k through 3" and will serve as reinforcement for grades 4–8 when needed.
Several board members and attendees praised early indicators of success. Christine Sass said she was "thrilled about the UFLI program" and welcomed increases in scores attributed to the district’s science-of-reading efforts.
Superintendent Dr. Stokes used the policy presentation to review the 3000 and 4000 series and to clarify two policies for the public: policy 4112 (board–staff communication) centralizes communications through the superintendent to streamline procedures; and policy 4140 clarifies that while the superintendent makes staffing recommendations, terminations are made by board vote.
The superintendent also previewed upcoming agenda items including a report on special populations (special education) at the next meeting and noted the draft budget and first readings for finance templates would be on future agendas.
