Dr. Yvonne Stokes, introduced as the new superintendent of Gary Community School Corp., delivered a recorded message to the board and community at the July 10 meeting outlining a student-centered vision and priorities for the district.
"I am honored and excited to join the Gary Community Schools Corporation as your new superintendent," Stokes said in the recorded remarks shown during the meeting. She described a focus on academic growth, stronger community partnerships and financial sustainability, and urged board members and community partners to "be prepared for the call to action every day."
Stokes previewed recurring "Gary Ready" snapshots that will highlight student work, partnerships and events at future meetings. She said the district will provide a monthly financial report and a staffing update at upcoming meetings and asked the community for help filling roughly eight open leadership positions in central office and school buildings.
In the superintendent's remarks, she also thanked community members and staff for welcoming her and closed by emphasizing collaboration to make Gary schools a first-choice option for local families. The board president thanked Stokes and moved on to public comment and consent business following the presentation.
The district did not provide names or job descriptions for all open positions in the transcript; the superintendent asked interested, appropriately licensed candidates to submit applications.
