District narrows reading options, expands tutoring and gives first reading to apprenticeship program

Curriculum and instructional staff updated the board on three related items: the reading‑adoption process, tutoring supports and a new apprenticeship opportunity.
Curriculum staff (Speaker 12) said kindergarten through fifth‑grade committees have reviewed two proposed reading‑adoption materials, heard publisher presentations and hoped to finalize a selection for a first reading in January. Secondary committees are narrowing separate lists and the high school is waiting for diploma guidance before recommending changes.
On tutoring, staff described participation in Indiana Learns, a state‑funded program targeted to students who did not pass IREAD (third grade and up). District‑funded tutoring was moved earlier this year to begin after fall break and provide support through the IREAD assessment in March for grades 2–3 and additional elementary students.
Mr. Carey (Speaker 13) presented a first reading of the Indiana Early Childhood Education Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program, reading program details into the record and saying the district would not offer all courses immediately but would pilot the first year and survey students from eighth grade through sophomore year to gauge interest. He said the district expects to partner with Ball State on program fidelity and will return next month for final approval.
