District to consider forming Greenfield Central police department; resolution set for second reading in November

The presenter emphasized the process is lengthy and not immediate: "It's certainly not something we plan on starting right away," and added that once a chief is in place that person would work through certifications and hiring. Staff said both GPD Chief Hartman and Sheriff Burkhart encouraged the district to explore having its own department because partner staffing is strained.
Board members stressed they intend to remain partners with the Greenfield Police Department and the county sheriff's office. The district said the resolution will return for a second reading in November and that no hiring or state petitioning will occur until after the board adopts the resolution and the required legal steps are completed.
