Greenfield-Central Com Schools board approves routine claims, sets budget hearing and hears construction and staffing updates

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central Com Schools board handled routine business at its meeting, approving minutes and claims, accepting grants and donations, setting advertisement for the district's 2025 budget hearing, and scheduling a special meeting to accommodate bond-related timelines.

District finance staff (identified in the record as Speaker 5) told the board the claims packet was larger than usual because of summer construction work — including a junior-high parking lot, the beginning of the soccer field, a Westin office remodel, high-school electrical work and a bathroom remodel — but said the district's results "continue to track our projections" and that the corporation was in a sound position financially. Speaker 5 also said the district received a preliminary assessed-valuation number for 2025 of "$2,400,000," which the presenter described as "about a 12.7 percent increase from last year." The board approved the claims docket and the grants and donations by voice vote.

The board voted to authorize the advertisement of bond-related notices and to add a special meeting on Sept. 23 to accommodate the legal and sale timeline Speaker 5 presented. Separately, the board approved advertising the Form 3 notice to taxpayers for the 2025 budget hearing and adoption schedule.

On instructional matters, the board received preliminary, embargoed graduation-rate numbers for the class of 2024; the presenter cautioned the figures are unofficial and may change before an October cutoff. The junior-high reported a PE curriculum review that incorporated input from more than 40 parents and said recommended materials had been selected using district rubrics.

Administrators updated the board on construction projects. An auditorium corridor and east entrance have progressed (railing in place while glass panels and finish work remain), and the junior-high soccer field turf has been installed with final stitching and site work underway; district staff said the turf installation had proceeded quickly and the field was expected to be ready for an upcoming girls' soccer event.

The board approved an annual special-education excess-cost service agreement, which allows the district to apply for state support when out-of-district special-education costs exceed the district's initial expense (the presenter said the district typically pays the first roughly $26,000). The board also approved personnel items including leaves, certified recommendations, resignations, a certified retirement, extracurricular-hire recommendations and permission to hire as needed for the 2024'25 school year.

Marketing and branding work was described as a refresh led by VIP branding at no charge to the district; principals are working with a VIP contact to align logos and district identity across buildings. The board also approved an overnight out-of-state FFA trip for student Logan McConnell.

Principals introduced new staff to the board, including Sarah Darling (who identified herself as "Sarah Darling, Harrison") and Dan Wabom ("principal of the high school"). Speaker 6 and other principals presented several teacher and staff hires across multiple buildings.

The board reviewed upcoming dates and future agenda items, including the regular meeting set for Sept. 9, an e-learning day on Sept. 17, a fall conference Sept. 23'24 and the 2025 budget public hearing. A motion to adjourn carried by voice vote.
