Dr. Roy T. Wilson, principal of WK Middle School, delivered a presentation to the Hillside Board of Education describing the school's mission, instructional priorities and new programs.
Wilson said the school's mission is to provide a supportive environment that develops students' academic and social skills, and he emphasized social-emotional learning (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making). He outlined curriculum tools and digital supports used in the school, including Amplify and IXL for ELA and a new initiative (OpenSCIAD) to expand science pathways.
Wilson described extracurricular and career-focused offerings such as construction and design, robotics, instrumental music, chorus, a new dance program, medical-detective coursework and 'Leader in Me' leadership development. He said the school prioritizes stakeholder engagement (custodians, cafeteria staff, parents and community members) and committee-driven improvements for cultural responsiveness, equity and parent involvement.
Wilson said data and ongoing professional development guide instructional improvements and reiterated a goal of preparing students for success at Hillside High School and beyond.
Ending: The presentation concluded with board appreciation and thanks to Wilson and his staff.
