Board hears student government, data-harvest highlights and board self-evaluation presentation

The Barnegat Township Board of Education heard multiple informational updates tonight, including a student-government report, committee briefings, and a board self-evaluation presentation by a New Jersey School Boards Association representative.
Student government president Daniel Hoffman, the high-school student representative to the board, described a peer-to-peer mentorship proposal that would pair roughly 75 juniors into teams to mentor cohorts of about 25 incoming eighth-graders, embed mentors in freshman homerooms, and support transitions, extracurricular engagement and early intervention. He also discussed a courtyard green-space concept (including interest in hydroponics and farm-to-table connections to the school bistro) and flagged upcoming student events and athletic achievements.
Dr. Lori Benlow led the board through the self-evaluation packet and bar graphs, explaining that scores at or above 3.0 indicate a high-functioning board. She highlighted planning (3.8), policy review, student achievement gains and strong board–superintendent and board–staff relations, and suggested optional training in finance and conflict resolution to help new and existing members maintain performance. “You really have done an excellent job,” she told the board.
Committee chairs reported out on finance, buildings/grounds/transportation and health/safety/technology topics, including donor acknowledgments, transportation routing work, summer-school planning, Chromebook inspection and fine-notification processes, and upcoming community events like an Ocean County mobile flu clinic.
The board opened a public comment period and recorded that no members of the public spoke. The meeting then moved into consent business and additional votes.
