Board reviews Donovan School remediation; specialists to inspect envelope and HVAC units

The Freehold Township School District board was updated on progress toward remediating indoor air-quality issues at Donovan School, including recent roof sampling and plans to clean and seal unit ventilators.
During the administrative report, the district said a building-envelope specialist — approved previously by the board — collected roof samples and provided materials for off-site analysis. A roofing contractor repaired areas opened for sampling, and the district expects the specialist to complete a scope of work for further investigation.
Administrator (administrative report) said the insurance engineers had recommended bringing in a building-envelope specialist and that the district had recently approved that specialist’s scope so off-site work could begin. “He had all of the materials that he had requested from the district to start his off-site work,” the administrator said.
Board members discussed next steps the specialists recommended that could be done regardless of determining the cause. The administrator said the first step in the specialist’s plan was to remove, clean and seal unit ventilators and that the district is now soliciting HVAC contractors to perform that work. “So Steve is...looking for HVAC contractors to do that work,” the administrator said.
Board members noted the district lacks in-house manpower and specialized equipment to open and deep-clean unit ventilators, so the district will request multiple proposals. One vendor has already inspected a unit and is expected to submit a proposal.
The administrator also said the building-envelope specialist advised documenting visible penetrations and gaps with before-and-after photos to demonstrate sealing work. District officials confirmed that any sampling-related openings have been repaired by the roofing contractor.
No formal vote was required at the meeting; the board was informed of the sampling and the district’s plan to seek contractor proposals. The administrator said she would continue to provide regular updates to staff, parents and the board as remediation work proceeds.
