Student government president: BHS recommended for Middle States accreditation; student programs and athletics highlighted

Daniel Hoffman, the executive student government president at Barnet High School, told the Barnegat Township Board of Education that the high school has been recommended for accreditation by the Middle States Association following a two‑year self‑study and an on‑site review.

“We welcomed them with performances from our band, the cheer team, and the dance team,” Hoffman said, noting that parents, teachers and students were interviewed as part of the review. He described the recommendation as a step toward “a better BHS every day.”

Hoffman outlined steps students are taking to translate the review into action. The student advisory committee has discussed a tiered mentorship program, broader recognition for student achievements and plans for refurbishing the high school courtyard. He highlighted one senior, Casey Salina, who is pursuing an independent study in early childhood education that includes classroom experience as part of a work‑based learning pathway.

Hoffman also noted student involvement in launching the Benny Bytes Bistro and listed recent extracurricular successes: trunk‑or‑treat turnout, and three varsity teams advancing to state playoff competition.

The superintendent, Dr. Lattwiss, told the board the district has been nominated for Middle States accreditation and that a formal decision will be reached in the spring after additional procedural steps. The district thanked staff leads, including Katie Torres, for coordinating the accreditation work.
