Board hears CIP recommendations totaling about $1.9 million; members debate Atkinson Belfry priority

The board reviewed Capital Improvement Program recommendations from the CIP subcommittee totaling roughly $1.891 million and debated which projects to prioritize.

The four projects proposed for next year are: high‑school bathroom renovations ($500,000), replacement or alternative solutions for main campus exterior metal fencing ($200,000), Atkinson Belfry preservation/repairs ($641,000) and a Danville roof replacement ($550,000). Administrators noted the CIP lane currently shows a nearly identical amount and that the items are recommendations to the board, which retains final authority on what to include in the proposed budget.

Board members expressed differing views. Some said the Belfry was a need tied to articles of agreement and historic obligation; others called for a more phased approach and asked whether the structural issues had been addressed in earlier work, suggesting only immediate safety concerns should be prioritized. Members also discussed potential cost savings if work were consolidated and noted an unusual LCHIP funding opportunity that could bring $150,000 to the project if confirmed in January.

Administration was asked to return with contractor scope and cost breakdowns to clarify safety versus preservation work and to confirm which elements must be done now versus deferred. The board indicated a consensus to keep the CIP line at the recommended level for budget committee consideration while recognizing some items will be re‑scoped or phased.
