Nebraska Legislature opens day 7; Sen. Hanson honors Jack Hoffman, reminds colleagues of bill-drafting deadline

The Nebraska Legislature convened for its seventh day of the 100th Legislature, First Session, opening with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance and handling routine quorum and committee notices. Sen. Hanson reminded members that the noon deadline to submit bill requests to drafting staff is today in order to guarantee introduction before the 10th legislative day; he said requests received after noon "will be drafted if time permits" and noted staff have received "over 1,100 drafting requests," asking colleagues for patience.
The session included a floor remembrance from Sen. Hanson for Jack Hoffman, a Nebraska youth advocate who inspired pediatric brain-cancer fundraising. Hanson recounted Hoffman's 2013 touchdown run and the work of the Team Jack Foundation, and asked colleagues to keep Hoffman and his family "in our thoughts and our prayers." The chamber also recognized Dr. Matt Bergaro of Omaha as the physician of the day.
Clerks delivered a package of committee notices and bill introductions across policy areas, and senators were invited to a new-staff orientation set for Friday, Jan. 17, at 9 a.m. The Legislature adjourned following a motion by Sen. Goreca.
The bill-drafting reminder and the volume of incoming requests were the most immediate administrative items for senators; formal consideration and hearings on listed bills will be scheduled by the committees that received the references and notices.
