The Box Elder School District Board of Education heard a concise audit presentation by Matt Geddes of the auditing firm Squire confirming that the district's financial statements for July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024, "present fairly in all material respects." Geddes said the auditors also found the district in compliance, in all material respects, with federal-award requirements (including ESSER) and with the state compliance audit guide issued by the Utah State Auditor.
Board members used the session to press for detail on the auditor's procedures and previous-year findings. Geddes described the audit as a risk-based, standards-driven engagement: auditors test samples of program expenditures (federal-award testing involved a rotating 20% sample), verify fund allocation for restricted levies, and follow Governmental Accounting Standards. He said last year's finding—classified as an "other matter" rather than a significant deficiency or material weakness—had been sufficiently addressed in the current year.
The auditor estimated the firm's work for the district at roughly 200'00'200 hours and noted Squire audits multiple Utah school districts and charter schools, giving the firm broad K'12 public-education experience. The board received the report without formal dissent. No additional formal actions were taken; the board proceeded to other agenda items.
