Osborne board deadlocks on two proposed school calendars; decision deferred to January

District staff presented the calendars following an eight-step process that included parent and staff input, mock calendars, and a district-wide Google Sheet that collected preferences. Staff said initial raw results favored Calendar A by a narrow margin but noted votes shifted after clarifications; the final staff snapshot was near 54% for Calendar A and 46% for Calendar B.
Calendar A keeps an August start date aligned with Phoenix Union and proposes observing Indigenous Peoples' Day during a fall break Friday so that classified staff would not lose more pay in that payroll period. Calendar B would add a two-day "soft start" (late July/early August) and a Jan. 5 student-free day for district-wide professional development; staff warned Calendar B would require an ask of the budget committee to fund the additional district staff day.
Board members split over timing, family-childcare impacts of midyear days off, attendance patterns for short weeks before major holidays, and continuity with Phoenix Union. One board member expressed preference for alignment with Phoenix Union to avoid students starting in July; others said a soft start and midyear PD day could benefit teachers' planning and instruction.
Because each motion resulted in a tie vote (reported as 2–2 in the meeting), both motions failed; the board agreed to gather absence/attendance data, test-scheduling impacts and additional parent/staff input and to reintroduce revised calendar options when the board reconvenes in January.
