An updated table provided to the House Committee on Public Safety, Science and Technology shows a concentrated docket of firefighter promotion and recruitment matters, and committee members urged CASP to prioritize those files where possible.
The table presented to the committee lists 24 active operational cases and 25 active arbitration cases related to firefighter promotions, recruitment and selection. Committee members asked CASP to explain the procedural difference between appeals (operaciones) and arbitration and how those distinctions affect case scheduling and timelines.
CASP said it consolidates cases when they arise from the same factual act or involve the same parties; consolidated 'block' scheduling and status conferences have been used to move groups of cases more quickly. CASP told the committee that a status‑conference hearing for several consolidated arbitration dockets is scheduled for Oct. 31, and officials said that parties would be asked at that session whether any matters could be resolved or narrowed.
Lawmakers pressed for prioritization of firefighter files and said they would seek meetings with budget and oversight leaders to find short‑term help for CASP. The committee did not take a formal vote but recorded members’ intent to pursue legislative and budgetary follow-up and to ask CASP for targeted updates on firefighter dockets.
Next steps: CASP confirmed the Oct. 31 status conference and the committee said members would confer with the House Budget Committee and other leaders to consider funding or procedural changes to alleviate backlog.
