Morristown Shade Tree Commission reports budget and Bud Park planting; flags illegal pruning

Kristen Ace, speaking for the Morristown Shade Tree Commission at the Dec. 10 public hearing, said the commission completed its 2024 fall planting and installed deer protection on 70 newly planted trees in Ward 3. She thanked council members and volunteers for help with the effort.
Ace said the Bud Park native-tree and shrub planting project cost about $36,000 and was paid roughly 90% from the Shade Tree Fund; she said the fund presently holds more than $40,000 because money flows into it when developers or property owners do not plant required trees. Ace asked the council for continued support and noted the commission’s outreach to the DEP and EPA on environmental-justice issues in local parks.
She also reported ongoing problems with illegal pruning on Morris Street and said the arborist will assess any damaged trees. Ace thanked local Whole Foods for providing water for the Bud Park planting for two years.
