Del City renews Flock Safety camera contract for another year at $32,500

The Del City City Council voted Sept. 3 to renew its contract with Flock Safety, continuing the city’s deployment of 10 automated license-plate-reading cameras for an annual cost of $32,500 through June 30, 2025.

Police leadership described the program as a valuable investigative tool. “I think it's a fantastic program,” the chief said while recounting uses in investigations and requesting staff provide summary statistics in a future update. Council members asked about equipment durability and replacement costs; the chief said he was not aware of any damaged units and estimated a replacement cost of about $35,100 per camera.

Councilmembers also discussed private partnerships and neighborhood options. The record notes that private businesses and neighborhood groups can purchase cameras or host units and provide access to the city; the police department said such privately installed units can be integrated to provide hits for stolen vehicles or other alerts.

Council approved the motion to renew the contract by voice/roll-call vote with Councilmembers Finch, Dean, Brown and Tatum voting “Aye” and Mayor Eason voting to carry the motion. The city will continue to work with Flock for maintenance and periodic camera re‑aiming as needed under the vendor’s support agreement.

Next steps: staff will finalize renewal paperwork and the police department said it would return with statistical impacts and any budget implications.
