Commission recommends approval of special‑use permit for childcare at 4601 N. MacArthur Blvd

The Warr Acres Planning Commission voted to recommend that the City Council approve a special‑use application for a childcare center at 4601 North MacArthur Boulevard.

The applicant, Kristen Amon, told the commission the location previously housed a daycare and appears set up to resume that use. Amon described the proposed operation as a "holistic and nature based" daycare and said hours would be family‑convenient, roughly 6:45 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., with occasional evening outreach activities. “For the most part, we’re just a basic daycare,” Amon said, adding that the program tends to attract children with learning differences because of its approach.

On capacity and staffing, Amon said she would pursue licensing for 40 children even though the building could accommodate about 53, and that she planned for about seven staff members initially. Commission members questioned how ingress, egress and drop‑off/pick‑up flows would operate from MacArthur and 45th; Amon said she preferred the front entrance for drop‑off but acknowledged most parking is in the rear and that arrival patterns would be adapted to what the site and code allow.

Staff and an inspector noted the previous childcare operator had let its license lapse for roughly a year, which contributed to the item’s referral for review. No members of the public spoke during the hearing. Commissioners moved to recommend approval; roll‑call votes were recorded in favor. Staff reminded the applicant that the City Council is the final decision‑maker and that additional building permits and a business license may be required if council approves the special use. The council meets next Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
