Warr Acres planning commission recommends City Council approve cafeteria addition at Putnam City High School

The Warr Acres Planning Commission voted Oct. 8 to recommend that the City Council approve a special-use permit for a cafeteria addition at Putnam City High School, 53100 Northwest 50th.

Dr. Shabron Brookings, chief operations officer for Putnam City School District, told the commission the project is part of a larger renovation and will not change the school’s use or increase student enrollment. "This is gonna really gut it out and make it nice and new for our student[s]," he said, describing plumbing failures and a kitchen that dates to 1958.

Staff described the application as a formality tied to special-use permit requirements; a subsequent building permit review will follow if the council approves. Commissioners opened the public hearing, recorded no public opposition, closed the hearing and voted to recommend approval. Roll-call votes recorded affirmative votes from members identified in the record as Corey, Downs, Fentry, Becker and Johnson; the motion passed.

The commission emphasized that its role is advisory and that final action rests with the City Council, which is scheduled to consider the item at its next meeting in the same room at 6 p.m. next Tuesday. Applicants were advised to attend the council meeting; staff noted failure to appear could result in the case being deemed withdrawn.
