BOSTON — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu spoke at Northeastern University about the city’s approach to people- and values-centered artificial intelligence, describing municipal policies and partnerships that aim to put residents and workers at the center of technology deployment.
“Last year, the city of Boston launched the 1st municipal generative AI policy of its kind nationally, offering guidance to our workforce on how best to leverage AI to improve our delivery of city services,” Wu said, framing the policy as a tool to encourage responsible use while promoting innovation.
Wu said Boston is partnering with state and federal partners to pilot AI applications for local problems, including U.S. Department of Transportation funding to explore AI uses for traffic flow, parking optimization and flood prediction. She also described city programs to expand AI literacy, including workshops for teenagers and data science curriculum plans for Boston Public Schools high schools.
Wu emphasized aligning city and state efforts so that research and investments hatched in Massachusetts, particularly at universities, can be implemented locally and benefit residents and students. She thanked the members of the governor’s AI Task Force and Northeastern’s research teams for their collaboration.
The mayor’s remarks preceded demonstrations from Northeastern researchers and an on-site meeting of the governor’s AI Task Force that afternoon.
