The New York City Council on Dec. 19, 2024 approved multiple street co‑namings honoring local leaders, activists and cultural figures across Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and other boroughs.
Council member Crystal Hudson presented an invocation spread and introduced a co‑naming to rename President Street between Brooklyn and New York Avenues as Lubavitcher Rebbe Way in honor of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Hudson said the Rebbe's leadership "expanded Chabad Lubavitch's global reach" and recounted community service that motivated the co‑naming.
Other co‑namings presented on the floor included tributes for Elizabeth White Markham in Astoria, Donna Maxwell, Don Lee, Saint Philip's Episcopal Church, Thich Nhat Hanh, Mani Callan, Clara Hayes, Scooter Joe Willens, Miriam Carter and the Black Angels (nurses at Sea View hospital), among many others. Speakers described honorees' volunteer work, leadership in immigrant communities, advocacy for tenants and workers, and lasting local legacies.
Most members offered brief sponsor remarks or brief explanations for votes; the slate of co‑namings was adopted as part of the general orders calendar. Several members welcomed family members and community representatives into chambers for the occasion.
What comes next: the Council's adoption clears the way for municipal signage and administrative steps to formalize the co‑namings; the exact schedule for signage installation and municipal action will be coordinated with the city's transportation or signage offices.
Provenance: co‑naming sponsor statements and floor explanations appear throughout the general orders sequence in the record.
