Governor, choir and families mark annual State House tree lighting

The Hamilton Garrett Youth Choir performed holiday songs at the Massachusetts State House, and the governor (name not specified) led the annual tree-lighting ceremony, thanking veterans, members of the cabinet and foster families in attendance.

The choir opened the event, with a leader saying, “We are so excited and grateful to be here tonight,” and inviting the audience to sing along. After the performance, the governor welcomed attendees to the State House, praised the choir and said, “I’m so grateful and proud and privileged to be governor of the state.”

The governor recognized statewide officials present, naming “treasurer Goldberg, inspector general Shapiro, [and] auditor DiZaglio,” invited members of the legislature forward and thanked veterans, service members and military families. He also noted that “we just dedicated another tree in Memorial Hall in the state house this afternoon to our gold star families” and urged attendees to reflect on those who have served.

The ceremony included special recognition of foster families and thanks to Commissioner Steverne Miller and the Department of Children and Families for their work. The governor also thanked the Bureau of the State House, the DCR Rangers, Massachusetts State Police troopers, staff from the Office of the Governor and local farms and small businesses that provided food and beverages.

As children and special guests joined the stage, the governor and Santa’s helpers led a countdown. Participants flipped a switch together to light the tree, and the moment concluded with applause and high-fives. Attendees were invited inside for refreshments following the lighting.
