Planning board adopts 2025 calendar, elects officers and hears public comments on downtown revitalization

Members then conducted officer elections. Mr. McLean was nominated and re‑elected as chair; Mr. Weatherholz was nominated and elected as vice chair. Voice votes confirmed both appointments.
In board reports, Midtown noted three commercial grant awards and a public‑private partnership for the Valencia Square multifamily project that includes affordable housing. Beachside and downtown reports focused on parking for events, the city’s bike‑week master plan and concerns about surface parking versus structured parking.
Public comment highlighted a theme of preferring activity over vacancy. One commenter said, “Vacancy is death,” urging the city to allow uses that generate activity and investment downtown, while another commenter praised recent Main Street improvements and new businesses such as 35 Bistro and a local brewery.
The board concluded the meeting with holiday greetings and adjourned until the next scheduled meeting.
