North Canton council elects Matthew Stroya president, names Stephanie Warren vice president

Matthew Stroya was unanimously elected president of the North Canton City Council at the organization meeting on Dec. 2, taking the chair after a roll-call ballot that recorded seven votes in favor and none opposed.

The council opened nominations for president during the session; one member nominated Stroya, who accepted the nomination. Clerk Liam conducted the roll-call ballot and certified the result. ‘‘I appreciate it. Happy to serve,’’ Stroya said after the vote.

The body also elected Stephanie Warren as vice president by the same 7–0 margin. After the vice-presidential vote, council moved to adopt its rules for the 2025 legislative year. Members approved several redline edits and amendments to Rules 1, 31, 32 and 42 individually and then adopted the rules package as amended.

Council used the organizational meeting to fill several representative posts. By roll call the council appointed Stroya as its representative to the Planning Commission and named John Orr the council’s representative to the Zoning Board of Appeals; both appointments were recorded as unanimous (7–0). Members also approved a small, ministerial acceptance of a 0.13-acre tract tied to road widening near a school and referred several planning matters to the Planning Commission for study.

The votes were procedural and brief, and council members emphasized orderly transition and continuity. Clerk Liam reminded members to submit committee assignments by Dec. 9. The organizational meeting adjourned and the body moved into a Committee of the Whole to consider planning, streets and funding items later in the evening.

What happens next: The appointments and rule changes take effect immediately; rezoning requests discussed in committee were referred to the Planning Commission for formal recommendations that council will consider at a later date.
