The Soda Springs City Council on Aug. 21 authorized combined spending of up to $35,000 for building maintenance: up to $15,000 for repairs and cosmetic work at the Geyser Park building and up to $20,000 for carpeting or other durable flooring at city hall.
Council members said the Geyser Park kiosk and public rooms are drawing tourists and show signs of masonry and grout deterioration; staff recommended addressing structural brickwork first, then painting and professional carpet cleaning if funds remain. Councilmember Hart identified roughly $42,500 available in current fiscal-year maintenance budgets; council agreed that completing work before the fiscal year ends Sept. 30 would be desirable so funds can be spent in the current year.
For the city hall building, staff reported carpet approaching a safety hazard for employees. Council discussed options including replaceable tile or other durable flooring; members agreed the priority is a safe, durable floor that improves public-facing spaces. The motion authorizes the public works director (Justin, speaker 8) to spend up to the authorized amounts at his discretion to address prioritized needs within the approved sums.
Next steps: Justin and staff will procure work and report back to council; the council left a small buffer in budgeted maintenance funds for any other emergent repairs through the end of the fiscal year.
