Council adopts downtown signage, awning and mural guidelines presented by design committee

The Marysville design committee presented downtown signage, awning and mural guidelines developed over roughly 18 months to preserve downtown continuity and reduce ad-hoc sign approvals.
Rory Clark and other design committee members said the effort grew alongside the historic district work and aimed to encourage consistent downtown design while avoiding retroactive cost burdens for existing signs. Clark said the committee wants to “be a little more preemptive of having permits and everything” and noted that existing signs that do not conform would be grandfathered.
Council members praised the work as thorough and moved to approve the guideline package; a motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will implement the guidelines through the permitting process and include the standards in notifications to downtown property owners.
