Council accepts donated bike racks for Ryerson Public Library

Mandy Cook, director of the Ryerson Public Library, asked the council to accept two Landau bike racks that a local business offered to donate and to authorize city staff to install them on the west side of the library.
Cook told the council the racks would reduce sidewalk obstructions by providing secure parking for about four bikes at a time and that the library plans to circulate bike locks to cardholders so patrons can secure their bikes. “We are developing a library of things, and one of the things that we are going to offer is bike locks,” Cook said.
Council members and staff discussed placement options, snow‑removal impacts and avoiding an existing commemorative plaque. City staff indicated they preferred to install and anchor the racks to ensure stability. After brief discussion, a motion to accept the donation and authorize staff installation was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The council did not attach conditions beyond standard installation and anchoring; staff said they will coordinate exact placement to avoid landscaping and plaque areas and to minimize impacts on snow clearing.
The council asked the library to alert patrons to downtown ordinances that require cyclists to walk bikes while in the downtown area.
