Depot for sale, Amtrak platform work expected and KDOT to update Heartland Flyer plan

City staff provided an operational update on the downtown depot and the Heartland Flyer extension.
Zach Stewart said the depot has been on the market for about a year and remains listed near $1,500,000; recent mechanical problems (an HVAC unit smoking) were limited to equipment and did not cause a building fire. Stewart said the current realtor had approached the city about a potential nonbinding letter of intent but staff recommended monitoring the listing and supporting other potential buyers rather than proceeding with purchase at the asking price.
On rail service, Stewart said Amtrak is "dusting off" plans for platform reconstruction and survey crews were recently on site. He said reconstruction work could happen in 12–18 months on an optimistic schedule (18–24 months as a conservative estimate) and that KDOT will hold a Service Development Plan meeting the next day at 1 p.m. to provide an update on the Heartland Flyer extension. Stewart said the service timeline in KDOT’s materials targets 2029 as the operational year if planning and funding proceed.
Commissioners were urged to review the KDOT materials and tune into the public meeting; staff said they had circulated the link to commissioners by email. No commission action was required on the update.
