The Taylor City Council voted to impose a six-month moratorium suspending the receipt and processing of new planned-development applications for gas stations, commencing Dec. 3, 2024 and running through June 3, 2025. The measure, recommended by the Planning Commission, is intended to give staff and commissioners time to map existing stations, examine zoning and environment concerns, and decide whether more controls are needed.
Councilman Johnson explained the Planning Commission’s rationale, noting the master plan update and a desire to "do the zoning and get it all on a map" before allowing additional development. Commissioners debated alternative durations: one council member argued a year is too long and suggested three months; others favored six months with an option to extend. The motion was amended on the floor to a six-month period and approved.
Officials said there are currently about 24–26 gas stations in the 24–26 square-mile city and that several applications are already approved or in process; approved applications would proceed despite the moratorium. The council emphasized the moratorium is time-limited and procedural—a pause to let staff complete necessary research—not an absolute ban.
