Taylor Honors Cemetery Committee for Restoring Historic Gravesites

Taylor City Council formally recognized the Taylor Historical Society Cemetery Committee on Oct. 15 for volunteer-led restoration work at city-owned cemeteries.
Caroline, who identified herself as chairperson of the Taylor Historical Commission and president of the society, told the council the committee began in early 2021 and has since carried out research, probing and restoration work. She provided the committee’s current accounting: 14 headstones with bases uncovered, 14 headstones (some partial), six headstones only, five bases only, and 20 unmarked graves identified. The society also maintains a spreadsheet cataloging 170 gravesites, listing 35 sites requiring simple repair, 63 requiring comprehensive repair, and 72 completed.
Council members praised the volunteers and asked about ongoing needs. The clerk and other officials said work typically runs from spring through fall and the committee uses fundraisers, merchandise and a cemetery walk to support projects. Council agreed to recognize the committee and to publicize volunteer opportunities and fundraising.
Next steps: committee members and the city will continue restoration work and coordinate any needed budget adjustments or materials through the clerk’s office and the mayor’s team. A merch table and flyers were noted during the meeting for community involvement.
