Board amends bond oversight charter to allow high‑school student voting member and appoints a student to the committee

Proponents, including board liaison Miss Ekstrom and the BOC chair, argued the change brings student perspectives into oversight of bond-funded projects. "We really need to include students and...they are a part of this district," Ekstrom said during the discussion. The Bond Oversight Committee indicated it will adopt criteria for student applicants (decent grades, good attendance, community involvement) and present those criteria for board approval at its next meeting.
Opponents, including Board Member Romero, said minors should not sit as voting members on a committee overseeing hundreds of millions of dollars in bond spending and suggested nonvoting student adjunct status would better preserve fiduciary responsibility. After an amendment limiting student members to high-school juniors and seniors, the motion passed (vote recorded). The board then voted 4–1 to appoint Owen Grossanders to the bond oversight committee. Owen, speaking after his appointment, said he would "always ask, how will this directly benefit the students of our district?" and pledged to prioritize student benefit in oversight work.
The BOC chair said the committee will draft formal eligibility criteria and return them for board approval. Board members asked legal counsel and staff to assist in formalizing processes that govern student membership.
