HOLLAND, Mich. — The Holland City Council handled routine business and a cluster of community comments at its Jan. 8 regular meeting.
The council approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from Dec. 18, 2024, executed oaths of office, a budget amendment for the Lake Metawah water transmission main rehabilitation, a claim filed against the city, a 2025 fee change, a revocable license for a projecting sign at 8 West 8th Street, principal shopping district board appointments and a bid award for workout room equipment for the Collin Park fire station. The consent agenda passed on a motion and roll call vote.
Council also accepted two items of public generosity: an in-kind donation of downtown flower pots from Bloom valued at $4,800 for the Downtown Development Authority and $812.32 from the Holland Police Officers Association to the Police Division for a replacement weapon following a retirement; council accepted the gifts with thanks.
On administrative matters, the council received and filed the fiscal-year 2025 second-quarter strategic plan and business plan progress report (Oct.–Dec. 2024). City Manager Keith Van Beek summarized highlights including a clean audit, work on long-term financial forecasting, a brownfield plan for a former nursing home site on 32nd Street, steps toward a rec center at 16th and Fairbanks, and partnerships such as an agreement with the nonprofit Velo Kids for use of the ice rink area when it is not frozen.
The meeting included a substantial public comment segment. Students from local high schools — including juniors and seniors representing West Ottawa, Zeeland West and Black River — offered thanks and support for the new ice rink and for recreation facilities such as Bowes pool. Bob Janetsky, Allegan County Clerk and Register of Deeds, briefed council on November election turnout and the availability of circuit court records online and promoted a county property-fraud alert service. Community member Carlos Estrada urged council to simplify and clarify the city's co-sponsorship and application process for multicultural arts programming, saying he had been unable to find clear guidance or a single department to contact.
The council also approved several appointments and reappointments: Lynn McCammon, Luciano Hernandez V and Greg Barry were reappointed to the Holland Satellite Smart Zone Board through Dec. 31, 2028; Audrey Pena was reappointed to the Board of Public Review to a term ending Dec. 31, 2027. The meeting closed with a motion to adjourn from Councilmember Shea.
No votes on ordinances or controversial items were recorded during the meeting; the Dwelling Place affordable housing items were handled in a separate approval (covered in a council action item).
