Sterling Heights council approves Jean M. Cloud as magistrate for 41A District Court

Sterling Heights City Council unanimously approved the appointment of Jean M. Cloud as magistrate for the 41A District Court, effective Jan. 6, 2025, following a presentation from local judges and a brief statement from the nominee.
Background and qualifications: City Manager Mark Vanderpool explained the statutory process for magistrate appointments and said Chief Judge and district judges had selected Cloud to fill the vacancy created by Magistrate Michael Piatek's retirement. In remarks to council, Cloud described 30 years as a Macomb County attorney and prosecutor, her selection as deputy court administrator at the Macomb County Circuit Court, and a self-help center she started June 4 that has served about 3,000 residents. That work, she said, informed her approach to putting residents first in court processes.
Council response and vote: Council members praised Cloud's record and experience. Councilmember Strauss said she had known Cloud for many years and called her "a fine person as well as a fine attorney." The motion to approve the judges' appointment was made and seconded and passed by unanimous voice vote.
Next steps: Cloud will assume the magistrate role on Jan. 6, 2025, succeeding Magistrate Piatek after his long tenure; council and court leaders noted she will be the 41A District Court's first female magistrate and welcomed her to the bench.
