Council approves MOU creating new marketing, animal control and library program positions

Sterling Heights council voted Dec. 3 to approve a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Michigan Association of Public Employees (professional/technical unit) to add three job classifications.
City Manager Mark Vanderpool explained the changes are funded in the FY25 budget and intended to support growing departmental needs. The new marketing specialist classification (two positions) will replace an outdated printing technician role and focus on modern communications, event promotion and social media for city programs. An animal control specialist classification will provide administrative support so animal control officers can focus on field duties such as responding to complaints and impoundment. The library programming specialist will be budgeted as a part‑time role to expand programming support and communication for the library.
Councilmember Yanez and others emphasized the roles are timely given expanding events and service demands; the council moved, supported and approved the MOU authorizing the mayor and city clerk to sign.
