Fayetteville schools outline timeline for new junior highs, parking deck and renovation projects

Steve Flickinger, speaking for the district facilities team, briefed the board on capital projects and near-term construction timelines.
Flickinger said MODIS Architects completed design documents for Windland Junior High and submitted those materials to contractor Nabholz on Dec. 13 for budget pricing; the district expects rough-order-of-magnitude pricing by the end of January and said the project is progressing through city and state facility approvals. The district said it hopes to break ground in late spring or early summer 2025 with a student-occupancy target of summer 2027.
On John L. Colbert, Flickinger said the city planning commission approved an expansion Dec. 9 and the district is preparing bid documents with Baldwin Schell (construction manager) and Lewis architects and engineers; staff anticipated bids in mid to late January and planned to present a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) for board approval at the March meeting.
Flickinger also updated several other projects: schematic design work on the Ramey Junior High replacement (Crafton-Tull and Lake|Flato were named as design teams), renovations to female restrooms at Fayetteville High School scheduled to start with temporary walls and scaffolding, completion of the Duncan parking-lot work pending the city certificate of occupancy, and a McNair outdoor-classroom restoration with drainage work and artificial turf slated for January installation. He said some projects (bathroom renovations, site work) will be scheduled to use school breaks to minimize disruption.
Board members asked about bid timing and traffic logistics; district staff said site setup would begin after school lets out and confirmed additional exit routes to reduce dismissal congestion at Fayetteville High. District representatives said they plan to present GMPs and bid-recommendation packages to the board in early 2025 for formal action.
No formal board action was taken in this update; staff said forthcoming board votes are expected when GMPs and contract recommendations are ready.
