Board approves 2024–25 Lakeland student/parent handbook with image legibility adjustments

Staff presented the draft 2024–25 student and parent handbook to the Walworth County Children with Disabilities Education Board on June 19. The handbook packet includes a memo, the draft handbook and a change log (packet page 46) highlighting proposed edits.
Key changes presented by staff include an updated school calendar for 2024–25, revised lunch-period times to align with a pilot block schedule, the addition of a PBIS (positive behavior interventions and supports) expectation matrix, updated disciplinary language (replacing the term "detention" with "student conference"), updated immunization and disease-information language to reflect new Department of Health requirements, and an upcoming link to an updated student-wellness policy.
Staff described updated options for lunch-account payments and a revised approach to unpaid meal charges that adds phone outreach to email and mailed notices. The publicity-notification and permission policy was clarified so families better understand scope of media/photograph permissions. Seclusion-and-restraint notification language was updated to current education-sector terminology and Special Olympics events were updated for the coming year.
Board members raised concerns that several graphics and tables in the packet appeared too small when printed. The board approved the handbook on a motion to accept with the adjustment that any images necessary for hard-copy legibility be expanded before distribution. The motion passed by voice vote.
The handbook will be distributed to families by mail and email and staff said they plan to provide the finalized handbook to families ahead of the school year to allow time to meet new immunization requirements.
