Pensacola ARB approves pool, door/window changes and Museum of Commerce landscaping

For 1421 North Balen Street in the North Hill Preservation District, staff described an application seeking final approval for rear-yard improvements including a 10-by-20-foot gunite pool, charcoal paver coping, granite paver decking and a six-foot flat-topped wood-and-metal fence along the north property line. The applicant who addressed the board said the photograph shown in the packet was out of date and that "we've just bought it a few months ago" and was available to answer questions. After brief discussion and a suggestion to consider more-corrosion-resistant exterior fixtures, the board moved to approve the application and the motion carried by voice vote.
At 92 West Gadsden Street, owner John Cummings introduced himself and said he and his partner bought the building six months ago and that he has obtained a Florida contractor's license. Staff reported written comments from the North Hill neighborhood association noting no objection to replacing the window with a door and to the aluminum-clad doors and fixtures but pointed out that drawings for the proposed landing and steps were missing. Staff said a code-required landing and step would be necessary. A board member moved to approve the application with the condition that the landing configuration and materials be consistent with the adjacent single-door landing and that those details be submitted for abbreviated review; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.
The board also granted final approval to landscape modifications at 201 East Zaragoza Street proposed by the UWF Historic Trust for the Museum of Commerce, which will replace existing concrete sidewalks with brick pavers, add planter beds and movable planters in the public right-of-way along Zaragoza and Tarragona Streets. Ross Prestera, the presenter for the Historic Trust, said the final drawings were cleaned up from the conceptual review and described movable cypress planters designed so a pallet jack can move them for festivals; a board member called the corner improvement "safer" and the board approved the application as submitted.
Procedural business: the board approved last month’s minutes by voice vote. The meeting adjourned with holiday remarks.
