Council members unanimously adopted a motion directing the administration to prepare a report in the wake of the fire that destroyed the 1,000 Hands playground at Sawyer Point, commonly associated with the Big Mac (Daniel Carter Beard) Bridge. The motion — co-sponsored by councilmembers Krammerding and Albee — asks for options for replacement and for the administration to update council on progress.
Councilmember Krammerding praised the fire and police investigators for making arrests and acknowledged Parks Department efforts to identify replacement options, including potential Riverfront Park locations. Vice Mayor Kearney said Parks Board leadership expects extensive community engagement around the design and siting of any new playground.
The motion passed by roll call; councilmembers said they appreciated investigators' work and emphasized transparency and public input as the report is prepared.
