Residents and historians urge county to preserve 1914 Nueces County Courthouse

Valerie Bates (marketing director, City of Port Isabel, speaking for the Texas Tropical Trail Region) and Jim Cline (vice chair, Nueces County Historical Commission) presented letters of support and a resolution the historical commission adopted March 10 urging the county to follow summary recommendations from a July 2019 Texas Historical Commission presentation. The resolution asks that the county undertake a comprehensive structural evaluation, pursue coordination with the City of Corpus Christi and TxDOT for excess right‑of‑way acquisition, consider lowering a sale price to incentivize private‑sector redevelopment, and clarify RFP expectations for redevelopment proposals.
Commenters described the 1914 courthouse as historically significant and cited its resilience through major storms over the past century. The judge and commissioners thanked the speakers and said the court would take the presentations under advisement and that further staff follow up could be placed on a future agenda.
