Mason School Board elects Ian Orr president, approves 2025 schedule and routine business

Ian Orr was elected president of the Mason City School Board at the start of the meeting, and Matt Steele was elected vice president, after members moved and seconded nominations and completed roll-call votes.

Superintendent Jonathan introduced the reorganizational items and thanked the board for the leadership transition: "Congratulations, board, for the transition president and vice president," he said. After votes, Orr took the center chair and thanked members for their trust.

Beyond leadership changes, the board approved a package of routine administrative measures. Members adopted a revised 2025 meeting schedule that shifts regular meetings from the second and fourth Tuesdays to the first and third Tuesdays of each month beginning in February. The board also approved a personnel item to grant unpaid leave to Aaron Cherney and authorized the superintendent to make employment offers between meetings (with any hires returning for board approval at the next meeting).

The treasurer described several finance-related motions that the board approved by roll call: authorization to request property tax collection advances from the County Treasurer's Office (to receive collections earlier in the year and earn interest), establishment of a service fund for board professional development, and annual authorization to process daily payments and accounting transactions. The board also approved the annual Records Commission appointments to oversee records retention and disposal procedures and designated the treasurer as the district's public records representative and training designee, consistent with state public records requirements.

Superintendent Jonathan and the treasurer explained that the tax budget and related filings begin the county-level review process used to inform millage-setting and bond retirement balances. Jonathan noted the district will meet with the county budget commission next month to continue that process.
