Board approves county funding requests for Jonesborough demolition and visitor-side stadium repairs

The Lee County Board of Education approved two formal requests for county capital funding tied to facility work, the board decided Monday.
Member 4 moved and the board approved a request to the county for $496,635 to complete demolition and asbestos abatement at the Jonesborough site. The presenter said a prior special capital allocation had reverted to fund balance because the work crossed fiscal years and the board needed a fresh request.
The board also approved a funding request for repairs to the visitor side of Lee Senior Stadium, moving a motion to request $271,625.34 for demolition and a new concrete pad this fiscal year and to add replacement bleachers to the 2025-26 capital-improvement program. During discussion members noted the board had already funded home-side work from capital funds and that replacement bleachers would be delivered in a subsequent fiscal year. One board member questioned whether staff-pay requests could be included, but board counsel and staff explained capital outlay funds cannot be used for salaries and that ongoing pay increases must be addressed in the county's budgeting process.
Board members agreed to include a clear list of capital projects in letters to the county so that, if a requested allocation is not approved, the district can explain why certain projects would be delayed. The motions were approved by voice vote.
