Cabell County board presents calendar options, community favors ‘Calendar B’; two public hearings scheduled

Board calendar committee chair Ashley Stevens walked the board through the district’s calendar-adoption process and community survey results at the Jan. 14 meeting, saying the committee developed three options for each school year after input from parents, teachers, administrators and students.
Stevens reported that Calendar B was the most commonly preferred option in the district’s survey: 62% favored Calendar B for 2025–26 and 48% for 2026–27. She said the committee’s top priorities included starting school in mid-August, finishing before Memorial Day and guaranteeing a spring break week without calendar days.
Stevens said the district will hold two required public hearings — at the next two regular board meetings — and that the board could vote on adoption at its second meeting in February after the hearings conclude. Board members praised the committee’s outreach and said the proposed calendars reflected a balance of priorities and statutory constraints.
Board members asked follow-up questions about specifics such as spring-break placement, snow make-up options, and parent–teacher meeting scheduling. Stevens said the packet that accompanies the agenda includes the calendar choices and survey summaries for review.
