Council spotlights arts programs and honors Good Neighbor Award recipients

The Oct. 22 Kettering City Council meeting began with several community recognitions and an extended arts presentation.
Mayor Lanier presented a certificate to Alta High School’s boys basketball coach for a Division II state championship. The council and the Board of Community Relations recognized recipients of the second annual Good Neighbor Awards; speakers praised nominees’ volunteer work and contributions to neighbors’ safety and wellbeing. The board said it received 21 nominations and invited several winners to accept certificates and attend a reception following the meeting.
In honor of National Arts and Humanities Month, council read a proclamation recognizing local and national arts organizations. Penny Miller of the Kettering Arts Council outlined the council’s mission, partnerships with Dayton Metro Libraries, a mural project that employed three Fairmont teens and internship opportunities with Wright State, Sinclair and the Dayton Regional STEM School. Resident Laura Arbour described how Rosewood Art Center programming contributes to economic development, citing a 42% increase in clay-studio visitors and a 17% increase in class registrations since a recent renovation. Shane Weber and Tracy McElfresh highlighted placemaking, ADA upgrades and long-term cultural programming at Rosewood.
Council members praised the initiatives and encouraged residents to attend upcoming exhibitions and events.
